About My Soap

Frustrated Woman

YOUR SOAP PROBABLY ISN'T SOAP

Do me a favor...run and look at the commercial products you have now.  Seriously, take a look and I bet you'll be hard pressed to find the word "soap" on them. Surprising isn't it?  I hadn't thought of it either before I started making soap.

COMMERCIAL WASH ISN'T AS BENEFICIAL

Commercial soap sold in stores is often made with chemical detergents, hardeners and synthetic lathering agents. Some of these ingredients can be drying or irritating on the skin. On the other hand, handmade soap created with oils, liquid and lye does not contain these harsh ingredients and qualifies as ‘soap.’

GLYCERIN...WHY IS THAT IMPORTANT?

Soap starts as a basic mixture of oils and lye solution. The mix results in soap and glycerin.  What the heck is glycerin and why do I want it in my soap anyway?  Good question!
Glycerin is a humectant that attracts moisture from the air to the skin. It’s produced naturally during the soap making process. It’s one of the things that make handmade soap so amazing!
Some commercial soaps remove the glycerin from the bars and sell it to make lotions and creams. Without glycerin, commercially prepared soap isn’t nearly as skin loving, and can leave the skin feeling dry.

LYE BECOMES SOAP
Even though soap is made with lye - WHICH ABSOLUTELY NO ONE WANTS DIRECTLY ON THEIR SKIN - there is no lye leftover once the oils, lye and liquid are mixed IF your soap is made by a skilled artisan soap maker.  It's now freaking soap! Isn't that amazing?  Yea, I think so too. :)
